Mrs Harrington learns that her daughter who was in Italy had given birth to a son before she died. She sends her other daughter and son to Italy to collect the baby. In Italy they meet a friend of the family – she wants to adopt the baby in memory of her friend. But they had not reckoned on the father of the baby and his love for the child. This adaptation of the Forster novel was first performed at the New Arts Theatre, London in 1963
